The paper stresses the relevance of polynomial matrices in three differ-ent approaches to the analysis of two-dimensional systems: input/output maps, state models and behavior descriptions. Some aspects of i/o and state models, like stability definitions and their algebraic characteriza-tions, as well as conditions for the existence of stabilizing/dead-beat con-trollers are surveyed. Finally, some preliminary results about stability and the design of stabilizing controllers in the context of 2D behavior theory are presented.
