Abstract. Since XML technologies have become a standard for data represen-tation, a huge amount of methods for processing XML data occurs every day. Consequently, it is necessary to compare the newly proposed methods with the existing ones, as well as to analyze the behavior of a particular method on vari-ous types of data. In this paper we provide an overview of existing approaches to XML benchmarking from the point of view of various applications and we show that the problem has been highly marginalized so far. Therefore, in the second part of the paper we discuss persisting open issues and their possible solutions.
