One of the most debated issues in the study of American politics centers on the alleged polarization of the electorate. Some scholars argue that the American electorate is becoming increasingly polarized (e.g., Koch 1994; McDonald and Popkin 2001; Olson 2008). Others contend that American voters are not becoming more polarized (Hetherington 2009).
