In this article, we highlight the fact that Chinese literacy acquisition can be a very different experience across societies because of the diversity of Chinese learn-ing environments. There are at least three ways in which this diversity can be documented. First, Chinese families often speak different languages or dialects, and the language spoken at home may differ from the one used for educational instruction at school. Such languages may sensitize or desensitize children to dif-ferent aspects of language crucial to reading, such as phonological awareness.
