We review recent works on the instanton calculation of prepotentials for Yang-Mills theory in four and five dimensions with eight supersymme-tries. We firstly review relevant prerequisites, specifically the Atiyah-Drinfeld-Hitchin-Manin construction of instantons and the localization formula of Atiyah-Bott-Lefschetz. We then move on to discuss the cele-brated works initiated by Seiberg andWitten, which used strong coupling arguments to determine the low energy prepotential.
