Narcissism is a personality trait featuring grandiosity, entitlement and vulnerability. Theorists have suggested that there may be sex differences in the expression of narcissism, due to the influence of traditional sex roles. Additionally, past research has shown that narcissism is associated with negative evaluations of others, despite findings that narcissists are often well liked on first meeting. The current study examined sex differences in self-reported narcissism, the relationship between narcissism and interpersonal ratings, and the influence of sex roles on ratings of narcissistic others. Four conditions of video stimuli were created to illustrate high and low levels of masculine or feminine narcissism in a job interview setting. Participants completed self-report measures of narcissism, were randomly assigned to view one of the video conditions and gave ratings about the interviewee. Sex differences were found in the expected directions, although the findings are qualified. Higher levels of narcissism, both reported and viewed, were associated with more negative ratings.
