At the start of the Cenozoic, the planet was ice-free; there was no sea ice in the Arctic Ocean and there was no Greenland or Antarctic ice sheet. Benthic Foraminifera d18O document a long-term cooling of the global deep ocean during the Ceno-zoic (Zachos et al., 2001). Because oceanic bottom waters originate in the polar oceans, Arctic climate history is broadly consistent with the global deep-ocean record. Although general cooling and an increase in terrestrial ice volume characterize the Cenozoic, this first-order was punctuated by short- and longer-lived climate reversals, by variations in cooling rate, and by additional features related to growth and shrinkage of ice once ice sheets were well established. A detailed Arctic Ocean record...
