The editors ’ purpose here is ‘to examine the present situation pertaining to lan-guages in Switzerland’. The six chapters which focus on Romansch, French, Italian, English, German and the writing of gender forms in Romandie proceed with no standard plan, no integrative essay by the editors, no index and no bibliography, although the main recent literature is cited in the footnotes. Each chapter explains some of the high points in recent debate, and these differ quite strikingly from one language, or language region, to another.
