Abstract The aim of this paper is to discuss the availability of the Fast Multipole Method (FMM) in developing the boundary element formulation for 2D wave equation. The resulting boundary element is used to end the mesh of the finite element method to solve open two-dimensional scattering problems. The expected gain in time to solving the equation system originated by the hybrid FEM-BEM (Finite Element Method – Boundary Element Method) method grows with the size of the equation system
