The primary business of the thrift industry is residential real estate lending. Section 5(c)(1)(B) of the Home Owner‘s Loan Act (HOLA) authorizes federal savings associations to invest in loans secured by ―residential real estate ‖ — subject to safety and soundness considerations. Residential real estate loans include permanent mortgage loans, construction loans, or other loans secured by single- and multi-family residential dwellings.
