Translation is one of the most complicated of biological processes, in-volving literally hundreds of specific macromolecules. Not the least of this complexity is the structure of the ribosome itself, which even in the relatively simple Escherichia coli version, consists of over 50 different proteins and three RNA molecules, comprising more than 4500 nucleo-tides, giving an aggregate mass of around 2.5 million daltons (Hill et al. 1990; Matheson et al. 1995).
