This paper briefly discusses early geographicalperspectives on water resourcesmanagement and notes that the current focus on integration was initially identified decades ago. Several dimensions of integrated water resources management are discussed, including a recent statement on the need for improved governance. Finally, various fundamentals are provided for river basin organizations charged with implementing IWRM, and suggestions are made for future geographical research on river basin governance
