Womens participation in sport and physical activities The beneficial effects of regular participation in sport and physical activity have been widely supported by scientific evidence. Studies have shown that physical activity can significantly lower the risk for cardiovascular disease, stroke, hypertension, osteoporosis, non-insulin-dependent diabetes, depression and some forms of cancer (Pate et al., 1995; Glasgow et al., 1997).
