AN ASSESSMENT OF THE USE OF COMPACT FLUORESCENT LAMP IN SOME RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS IN ILE-IFE

In the face of low power generation, proliferation of power generator leading to emission of fetal carbon monoxide and some dangerous gases, there is concern on how to effectively utilize the existing power generating capacity of the country. Researchers and public policy advocates have long known that fluorescent lighting saves energy (decrease lighting energy consumption by one-half or more for each incandescent lamp replaced) and reduces atmospheric pollution, but public acceptance of this technology has been slow to grow. The slow adoption of fluorescent lighting technology with emphasis on the residential sector is also true of the Nigerian context as evidenced by some studies. Many people still hold negative impressions about fluorescent lighting that are based on long outdated lighting technologies. However, with the immense benefit that our energy sector stands to gain from the current efficient fluorescent lighting technology in the use of Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL), it is necessary to probe the reasons that are accountable for its low adoption in our residences. A survey was embarked on where in 100 residences were randomly chosen from Igboya Neighborhood in Ile-Ife, and questionnaires were administered to the residents to ascertain the low usage of CFL and to probe the different reasons for which they will not be willing to adopt its use in their residences.
