This paper proposes a newly improved method of particle swarm optimization for solving economic dispatch problem with valve point effects and with ramp rates included.The new method of pso uses time varying acceleration coefficients. The proposed method is tested on a 13 unit system and 19 unit Indian systems. The result is compared with the traditional methods. This gave a good result for the observed systems
