Charged dust particles present in plasmas modify its electrostatic responses due to dust discreteness and continuous collection of plasma fluxes by the dust grains leading to fluctu-ations of the dust charge. Kinetic models show that in such systems new effects can arise or effects also present in ordinary plasmas can be enhanced. We discuss how these modi-fications can be applied for dust diagnostics with a particular focus on plasma fluctuation spectra for the in situ detection of sub-micron dust. 1
