Gene therapy, in its current form, seems to be a promising treatment option for almost all ocular diseases, because the eye represents a unique target organ for gene therapy due to both structural and functional properties. Encouraging results obtained for Leber’s congenital amaurosis, a hereditary retinal disease in childhood that is otherwise destined to blindness, focused not only ophthalmologist’s but also other clinician’s interest in gene therapy.
