Urban cooperative banks play an important role in meeting the growing credit needs of urban and semi-urban areas of the country. They have traditionally concentrated on retail services, providing savings products and credit to consumers, retail traders, professionals, self employed and small and medium sized enterprises. The most significant development related to UCBs was the extension of certain provision provisions of banking Regulations Act, 1949to the cooperative societies in 1966 after that which the cooperative banks also got the benefit of deposit insurance schemes.
