This dissertahon is a study of colonial impact on Lmaa narratives. Chapter One describes the Lmaa narratives in their connection with orality and the land. The social instituhons of kinship, rehgion, politics, and economic aspects are all integral to Lmaa ethnic idenhty. Chapter Two examines the colonial history, commodificahon of land, and the impact of modem ideologies on indigenous knowledge. The privatization ofland is gaining force to manipulate and alter the Lmaa ethnic symbols of community land ownership. Chapter Three describes the Lmaa history, which goes back to the pre-colonial era. Through oral narratives, the elders have narrated historical events since the age set of the eighteenth century.
