Abstract — In this paper, we propose a novel scheme for image compression by the curvelet transform. Curve functions are effective in representing functions that have discontinuities along straight lines. Normal wavelet transforms fail to represent such functions effectively. Modification of the traditional JPEG method based on region-of-interest coding is achieved and used curvelet transform. The modification will be done after the quantization step. In the beginning, the image is subdivided into a block of pixels; the block must be classified as foreground block or background block based on a pre-processing step.
