Design of Smart Electrical Energy Metering using Hall Device

Abstract—Electrical Power consumption is the product of applied voltage across the load and the load current flowing through it. Conventional power and energy meter follows electro-dynamometer principle. In this work, the Hall devices have been used to measure the power consumption in ac and dc circuits both. A miniature Hall integrated power sensor has been proposed, where the load voltage (VL) will be proportional to the Magnetic Intensity (B) applied along x-axis of the Hall sensor and the Load current (IL) passes through same Hall sensor along y-axis. According to the Hall Effect phenomena, the Hall voltage (VH) developed across in the direction z-axis of the sensor, which will be proportional to the product of the instantaneous values of VL and IL, indicates the magnitude of instantaneous power. Several electronic steps are proposed to make the measured power representation standard. A Hybrid low voltage and low current Texas Instrument make Microcontroller having 10 bit, 3 channels ADC has been used for digitization of Power output from Hall Power sensor. A method of self calibration of the electrical power / energy transmitter and a smart way to change scale of measurement system has also been proposed in this work. A separate design of circuit has also been proposed to have industry standard output which generates 4-20mA DC current signal proportional to instantaneous power. This work has so many scope of commercialization with low cost version and can be available for domestic and industrial power /energy measurement
