Abstract: Over thousands of years many people were commonly perplexed by a phenomenon that the Moon appears larger at the horizon than in the zenith. Here it is proposed that this may be ascribed to an unusual optical atmospheric effect. The thick spherical atmosphere forms a natural convex lens that lies between an Earthly observer and the Moon. The atmospheric convex lens simultaneously gives the horizontal Moon an elongation in the horizontal direction and a compression in the vertical direction, the combined effect is the horizontal Moon is on the whole enlarged, compared to the zenithal Moon
