hepatotoxicity in albino rats

The present study was conducted to evaluate the hepatoprotective activity of methanol extract of the whole plant of Galinsoga parviflora Cav. against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced liver damage in albino rats. The extract of G. parviflora Cav. (200, 400 and 600 mg/kg) was administered orally to the animals with hepatotoxicity induced by CCl4. Silymarin (100mg/kg) was given as reference standard of hepatoprotective activity. The extract was effective in protecting the liver against the injury as there was significant reduction in serum enzyme serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT) and serum glutamate oxaloacetate tansaminase (SGOT) and increase in total protein to the near normal value which are comparable to the values observed for standard drug (Silymarin), indicating the recovery of hepatic cells against the damage. In histopathological studies, the reduced level of cellular degeneration, necrosis and infiltration of hepatic cells in extract treated animals further support the hepatoprotective behavior of Galinsoga parviflora plant. The hepatoprotective potential of the plant showed concentration dependent activity. It was concluded from the study that G. parviflora Cav. possesses hepatoprotective activity against CCl4 induced hepatotoxicity in rats
