Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts for at least ten seconds. Apnea may occur 5 to 30 times or more in patients during sleep. Sleep apnea is diagnosed with an overnight sleep test called a polysomnogram, or "sleep study". More than eighteen million Americans suffer from sleep apnea (ASAA), and it is estimated conservatively that ten million remain undiagnosed.
