Off-label use of atypical antipsychotics in elderly patients In January of this year the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) announced that they will update an earlier comparative effectiveness research review titled “Comparative Effectiveness of Off-label Use of Atypical Antipsychotics.”1 You may have noticed that off-label use of atypical antipsychotics has generated controversy in recent months. Pharmaceutical companies have been charged and fined for improper promotion practices for off-label uses of these drugs, and one company has also been charged with making improper payments to a health company to promote off-label use of one of the atypical antipsychotics in nursing home residents.
