An Annotated Bibliography: Findings On Learning To Teach

(TELT) study involved eleven programs ranging from preservice and induction to alternative routes and inservice programs. More than 700 teachers in these programs responded to surveys. Researchers interviewed and observed 160 program participants in their classrooms. Their primary interest was to discover what teachers learned while participating in these different programs. The study focused on two subject areas--mathematics and writing. Many of the findings from the TELT study fly in the face of conventional wisdom about teacher preparation. In early 1992 the NCRTL disseminated an eight-page brochure, Findings on Learning to Teach, that outlined six intuitive assumptions that were contradicted by TELT study findings. This brochure reviews these conventional assumptions as well as the research findings and then provides an index of other publications that give details about each finding. In addition, this brochure references related research that NCRTL researchers suggested. The articles listed increased their knowledge and influenced their thinking about learning to teach.
