Cancer is a leading cause of morbidity, mortality, and premature death worldwide.1 While cancer was previously a problem principally of the industrially developed countries, it increasingly is a problem in the developing ones. Today, half of the world’s newly diagnosed cancers and over 70 % of all cancer deaths occur in middle and low-income countries2. This persistent and growing burden of cancer in the world’s populations warrants heightened public health attention.
