WIDespread general mid-S.Jmmer rains in Montana during the last 40 year.; were examined. Such weather events can result in significant rainfall over a large area and are caused by a strong upper Low or crough diverted across the State by a blocking upper Hir;ll over the central United States. The storm of July 9-10, 1983.is used as case study to sho w the precipitation pattern and weather associated with these systems. These synoptic-scale weather systems are rare in Montana during the S.Jmmer, and theft occurrence.is an indication of an abnormal S.Jmmertime general circulation pattern. 1
