Abstract. The ability to import ontologies safely, that is, without changing the original meaning of their terms, has been identified as crucial for the collaborative development and the reuse of (OWL) ontologies. In this paper, we propose the notion of local safety of an on-tology and we identify scenarios in which this notion may be useful in guiding the development of an ontology that is to import other ontologies safely.
