Gasification is an efficient method of producing clean synthesis gas (syngas) that can be used as fuel for electric generation or chemical building block for petrochemical industries. Numerical simulations of the coal gasification process inside a generic two-stage entrained-flow gasifier were carried out using the commercial CFD solver FLUENT. The 3-D Navier-Stokes equations and seven species transport equations are solved with eddy-breakup combustion model. All the species were assumed to mix in the intermolecular level. Simulations were conducted to investigate the effects of coal mixture (slurry or dry), oxidant (oxygen-blown or air-blown), wall cooling, and various coal distributions between the two stages.
