The inhibition effect of 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HOBT) on the corrosion of mild steel in 0.1 mol L ‒1 H2SO4 solution was investigated using weight loss, electrochemical measurement and SEM observation. The polarization curves indicated that HOBT behaved as a mixed-type inhibitor while the Nyquist plots revealed that the corrosion was a charge transfer controlled process. Moreover, the absorption of HOBT was found to obey the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The free energy of adsorption (ΔGads) was found to be −30.54 kJ mol −1 and this value indicated that the adsorption was mainly chemisorption.
