FIGURE 6.1. Field strips comparing production of direct seeded triticale, spring barley, hard red spring wheat, and durum wheat in an on-farm test on producer Jim Melville’s farm in a 12-inch or higher annual precipitation area in Lincoln County. On-farm testing is a repli-cated, statistically-valid research approach with field trials established and managed by grow-ers using their own farm equipment. The research approach has the advantage over traditional long-term field research by responding to growers ’ need for early information on impacts of implementing new management systems to address changes in farm policy, environmental concerns and economic conditions.
