In this work, we propose a methodology based on the alias resolu-tion process to demonstrate that the IP level view of the route pro-vided by traceroute may be a poor representation of the real router-level route followed by the traffic. More precisely, we show how the traceroute output can lead one to (i) inaccurately reconstruct the route by overestimating the load balancers along the paths toward the destination and (ii) erroneously infer routing changes
