Present trends indicate that large data bases are the viable and efficient solution for the mass storage of large amounts of scientific data collected during physical experiments. Scientists of Coastal Oceanography are pre-sently engaged in the implementation of an interactive sea scanning system using real time acquisition and display of oceanographic data. This report presents the concepts involved in the design of an information management system for a large oceanographic data base. Also, results obtained from a preliminary imple-mentation in the M.I.T. Multics system are presented
