In the past, plasma membrane-derived microparticles were considered “cellular dust. ” According to the literature, circulating levels of microparticles are increased in several cardiovascular diseases associated with inflammation, suggesting that microparticles are linked to deleterious effects such as endothelial dysfunction or thrombosis.
