1. The issue of persons missing from armed conflicts, abuses of human rights and other crimes against humanity is a global concern. The International Commission on Missing Persons addresses the complexities of this problem on a political, human rights and technical level. 2. In the former Yugoslavia, the work of ICMP has made it possible to locate, identify and commemorate thousands of victims, thereby opening the path to eventual closure and reconciliation for those war-torn societies. 3. ICMP has been working in Kosovo since 1999 in an effort to assist UNMIK and the local authorities in identifying persons missing as a result of the conflicts in that region.
