Many atmospheric phenomena such as thermals, plumes, storms, jets, fronts, tornadoes and hurricanes can be de-scribed as coherent structures. We have pioneered new algorithms called Field Alignment and Coalescence that make difficult inference problems for coherent structures, namely assimilation and uncertainty quantification, tractable. In this paper, we examine the problem of mapping coherent structures, which is also difficult to solve using existing approaches. We propose a dynamic data-driven hybrid mapping approach and apply it in initial experiments to the study of plumes.
