Wavelet and subband coding have been shown eective techniques for seismic data compression, especially when compared to DCT-based algorithms (such as JPEG), which suer from blocking artifact at low bit-rates. The trans-forms remove statistical redundancy and permit ecient compression. This paper presents a novel use of the Gener-alized Lapped Orthogonal Transforms (GenLOTs) for com-pression of 24-bits seismic data. The proposed implemen-tation provides a better frequency partition than that of the wavelet scheme. It is used with in the Embedded Ze-rotree Wavelet (EZW) framework, an embedded quantiza-tion scheme, allowing exact bit rate compression and in-corporating quality control features.
