Carbon County is located in south central Montana and was established in 1895 from portions of Yellowstone and Park counties. Rich deposits of coal, from which the county derived its name, were discovered there in the late 1880s. With completion of the Northern Pacific rail line into the area, numerous settlers were drawn to the area shortly thereafter.
