Mapping potential renewable energy resources in the Mediterranean region

For the purpose of constructing and discussing future energy scenarios, the renewable resources of the Mediterranean region are assessed, as part of a similar study on a global level. Extensive use of satellite data is made, because these are available everywhere and not restricted to locations of measurement stations. This is particularly important e.g. for the case of off-shore wind, for which few meteorological measurements are available. The main renewable resources considered are wind, solar and biomass energy. The results are presented on an area-based form, suitable for incorporation into geographical information systems (GIS), allowing the exchange and trade of energy to be evaluated, not just between countries but also on a local level, such as between local regions or between cities and rural areas
