Forestry may have an important role to play in attempts to reduce atmospheric CO2 levels, since countries may choose to account for forest management activities to fulfil their commitments under the Kyoto Protocol. However, the effectiveness of such efforts may depend on the forest management strategies applied. This thesis is based on four separate studies in which the potential for forest management strategies to decrease net CO2 emissions was considered. Long-term field experiments and models were used to: evaluate the impact of different thinning regimes; study broadleaved stands growing on abandoned farmland with different rotation lengths; predict the effects of using different rotation lengths on carbon accumulation and fossil fuel s...
