Three often debated issues about design doctoral education are discussed, including whether design education is fundamentally different from other disciplines, whether original works in design satisfies the requirement for receiving a PhD, and whether publication is as important in design as in other disciplines. Finally, the concept of “stewards of the design discipline”, proposed by the Carnegie Foundation, is described as a possible standard for re-examining the current structure of doctoral education in design. 1.
