Two groups of healthy volunteers, 37 participants each (22 females per group), with a mean age of 22.3 ± 4.77SD and 21.7 ± 3.12SD, respectively, participated in the eye movement data collection. All participants had normal or corrected-to-normal vision, normal colour vision, and were naïve to the purpose of the experiment. Volunteers gave their informed written consent in accordance with the Declarations of Helsinki, and experiments were approved by the Ethical Committee of the Department of Experimental Psychology, University of Bristol. Participants were asked to look at one of the two representations of Duccio's "The Annunciation", presented on an 18" flat screen monitor for 30 seconds, in any manner participants chose (group 1: daylight condition; group 2: candlelight condition). Images subtended a visual angle of 35.2 ˚ x 28˚. To ensure that all participants had the same scan starting point at image onset, subjects fixated a central point before the picture was presentated. Two-dimensional eye movements were recorded with the Eyelink II (SR Research Ltd.). The experimental session was preceded by a nine-point grid calibration and validation.
