This study was carried out for the Environmental Department of the Regional Govern of Madrid (Spain), within the framework of the Renewable Energy Regional Plan. The first step of the project was the elaboration of a regional wind map. The Renewable Energies Depart-ment of Ciemat installed five meteorological masts, with wind speed and wind direction sen-sors, and a data gathering system model NRG. Four of the masts were located ten meters above ground level, and the last one 40 m. a.g.l, with three levels of measurement. Data series are one-year length. The location of the meteorological masts aimed to characterize the different areas in terms of topography and complexity of the terrain. The Region of Madrid has such an irregular and special topography that it had to be divided into four different sections. A wind Farm Location Model (using the tools of the ModelBuilderÔ for ArcViewO Spatial Analyst), was applied for this Wind Resources Map. A “weighted overlay ” of some variables such as slopes, the natural protected landscapes, and, of course, the wind speed, was applied
