Currently, the application of laparoscopic approach for the resection of either colon or rec-tal cancer is proven to be technically feasible, safe, and efficient. However, the randomized clinical trials showing that the oncologic results are equivalent between laparoscopic and tradi-tional open surgery are only limited to patients with colon cancer. In contrast, for the surgical resection of rectal cancer, the treatment efficacy of laparoscopic approach remains ambiguous because the data based on randomized prospective clinical trials are still not available.
