It is currently accepted that cell-mediated as well as humoral immunity declines during human ageing [1,4]. Non-specific host defense mechanisms have also been implicated in this deterioration as several functions of polymorphonuclear neutrophils were found to be altered in the aged. We, ourselves, reported a decrease in chemotac-tic response, oxidative metabolism, and Candida killing activity, whereas adherence was enhanced [2].
