SUMMARY: This paper is a case study on the aspects related to the selection and permitting of a regional landfill to service the Rustenburg Municipal area. The regulatory process is discussed, and relates specifically to candidate landfill site selection, use of closed mines for landfilling and responsibility for long term environmental liability.
