The European Union (EU) is facing a substantial ageing of its population. While demographic change is having a differentiated impact at both the national and sub-national levels, overall the EU is experiencing a profound shift in the structure of its population. As populations age, the contribution of the over 50s to economies and communities is being reassessed. This paper examines the implications of demographic ageing for the workforce. Using the UK as a case study, it examines the barriers and disincentives to work that the over 50s face, and identifies an example of where they have been effectively tackled. ACTIVE AG
