SUMMARY

Commercial vineyards in the Czech Republic were surveyed for the presence of sixteen different viruses, testing phloem scrapings from dormant one-year-old shoots by ELISA. Grapevine leafroll-associated virus 1, Grapevine fleck virus and Grapevine virus A were found to be the prevailing viruses, with an incidence ranging from 14 to 25%. The aim of this study was to investigate the sanitary status of grapevines grown in commercial vineyards of the Czech Republic, where a total area of 18 395 Ha is given over to viticulture in Bohemia and Moravia, the two regions with warmer climatic conditions. With a surface of 720 Ha, the grapevine industry of Bohemia is much less important than that of Moravia, which ac-counts for ca. 18 000 Ha. For sample collection, a single site was selected in Bohemia and 12 in Moravia. Dor-mant wood was collected in winter from the vines to be tested (Rowhani et al., 1992). Vines were tested for the presence of sixteen viruses, which extends the number of pathogens considered in a previous survey carried out for the assessment of the sanitary conditions of prebasic propagation material of grape cultivars and rootstocks grown in Research Sta-tion collections (Komínek and Holleinová, 2003). In the earlier survey, grape accessions were tested for the pres-ence of Grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV), Arabis mosaic virus (ArMV), Grapevine virus A (GVA) and B (GVB), Grapevine leafroll-associated virus 1 (GLRaV-1) and 3 (GLRaV-3) and Grapevine fleck virus (GFkV), the pres-ence of all of which was ascertained (Komínek and Holleinová, 2003).
