SIMILAR SPECIES: Very closely resembles Collinsonia canadensis, which flowers later

in the summer (July-September). Other characteristics may be used to separate these species: C. verticillata has 2-3 pairs of leaves, an unbranched inflorescence and flowers with 4 stamens; C. canadensis has several pairs of leaves, a branched inflorescence and flowers with 2 stamens. TOTAL RANGE: s. VA to GA and AL; disjunct in s. OH. STATE RANGE (as of 2008): Post-1980 records are from Scioto County. HABITAT: Low, rich woods. In Ohio, known from mesophytic woods. HAZARDS: Unknown; possibly opening of forest canopy by logging. RECOVERY POTENTIAL: Unknown, probably poor due to the disjunct range of the Ohio populations. INVENTORY GUIDELINES: Mature flowering material is needed for identification. COMMENTS: Although the normal range of this plant is much more southern, there is a possibility that other populations are present in extreme southern Ohio and this plant should be sought there.
